Next to me, eight hours a day.

I could probably write a thesis on how office seating arrangements affect human relationships. I'm stuck next to this person for 8 hours a day, sharing everything—the phone call sounds, the sighing, even the vibration from their leg shaking. They're not a bad person, but the noise is tough, so I put on earphones, and now every time they talk to me, I can't hear them, and it's just repeated apologies. I'm trying to find the right moment to bring it up politely, but how do I start the conversation naturally?

Same here. If you say it politely, most of the time it's because they don't know, but sometimes there are clueless people too, and the damage from dealing with that cluelessness is big, so I usually just avoid it.
